"3DMark2001 uses two mechanisms to render shadows in the game tests: render-to-texture or software shadows. Render-to-texture method is preferred and used if supported by 3D accelerator hardware. Most modern 3D accelerators, including KYRO, support this rendering to textures feature.
DirectX 8.0 and 8.0a had an issue where render-to-texture functionality was not exposed on KYRO hardware. By installing DirectX 8.1 or new KYRO drivers, 3DMark2001 starts exploiting the render-to-texture instead of software shadows.
The problem comes from a interaction with the rendering order in 3DMark2001 and the scene-capture rendering used by KYRO hardware. The combination results in sorting/order problems (very noticeable visual glitches).
This issue became apparent only when new DirectX and drivers exposed this functionality. At the time of release, 3DMark2001 ran without glitches on KYRO hardware.
Scene-capture hardware like KYRO requires all information needed for a frame to be available in the beginning of rendering the frame. 3DMark's shadows are on the other hand rendered on demand. Correcting this problem requires a change to the shadow rendering order.
We're still dedicated to making 3DMark2001 fully compatible on KYRO cards and are planning to release an update that along with some other issues and new features corrects this problem. The update will be released as soon as possible.
However, we are not ready to announce a release date for the update at this point. Additionally it is not MadOnion.com's policy to report performance information acquired with unreleased benchmark software, so we will not comment on the possible performance impact of this change."
